What Happens if it Rains on Your Wedding Day

Walter & Jacci

Having the possibility of rain is always a challenge for couples on their wedding. Muddy shoes, drenched suits, trashed dresses, and a whole lot of mumbling from the guests are but a few results of a downpour. That’s why it’s quite understandable that most couples feel it’s better if they had bright and sunny weather on their wedding especially when they’ve resolved holding their ceremony outdoors. But a little bit of preparation won’t hurt to ensure that weather disasters are avoided. When it does rain, couples could simply enjoy the moment the same way Walter and Jacci did when it happened to them on their special day.

Couples can never be too prepared to make their day perfect, for Walter and Jacci, it wasn’t just rain that they had to prepare for – it was everything else. While they made sure they had a nice and big white tent that doubled as a rain shield, really nice clear umbrellas which they even imported from China, they also made sure they have all those small nitty-gritty details in place to create the vintage wedding theme they wanted.

What was absolutely amazing about what they have created is that the whole theme down to the little trinkets, cups, saucers, and some other things reflected much of the couple’s personalities. Holding the ceremony outdoors was also a mutual decision they made since it was something they both loved. It was remarkable that Jacci’s sister and brother-in-law had a sheep farm called Flock Ewe Farm which was the perfect venue for the theme that the couple wanted. It had plenty of outdoor space, lots of shade, trees of all kinds and sizes, that romantic ambience, that vintage feel, and a rugged grassy background that created a beautiful contrast to the elegant pieces of the wedding.

We arrived at the venue while they were still finishing with the setup. We could see how even the smallest of details was carefully in the right place. There was this countryside laidback feel to the setting and a very tasteful shabby chic style to fit the whole vintage theme. The table setup, the dessert tables, and even the cocktail bar made from old wooden boards were well thought through. We liked how they also used an old typewriter in giving farewell greetings and messages for the couple.

But more than the great venue, the remarkable detail from the items they were able to scavenge, and the vintage theme that worked really well, it was having weeks of creating unforgettable memories together that made the whole do-it-yourself project worthwhile. We learned that Walter and Jacci searched everywhere for the right pieces that would match their vintage theme. Even the smallest of details perfectly fit their design puzzle.

They searched every antique market and auction in Toronto for items that complimented their theme. Sometimes they ended up getting items from the road side or a rundown barn filled with wooden slabs which were excellent for making signs. We also heard how they spent time building decks, chasing lambs, and wandering about 3-acres of gardens at the farm. These are moments that are truly filled with fun, inspiration, love, and creativity.

Everyone was quite excited on the day of the wedding. There was a lot of laughter and smiles in Jacci’s room as they dressed up for the occasion. The bride herself was quite relaxed as she wore her stylishly laced gown, crystal gemstone earrings, pearl necklace, and her nice pair of pastel green doll shoes. She was a great example of a happy elegant bride.

Walter on the other hand was still busy with his buddies fixing the last few things while Jacci was prepping. When he finally had a breather and got ready for his wedding, you could just see his face light up with great expectation. A letter from Jacci to Walter made the moment even better.

We took really nice editorial-magazine-like photos with the men when they were finally on their gorgeous matching suits. With corn-fields and a rugged road background, it was like a modelling event for Walter and his entourage.

While the grassy plains and corn-fields kept us trigger-happy, the whole setup in the tent also kept us on our toes. Even the food matched the whole theme. We were especially curious about their signature drink called it the Boustead – a flavorful concoction which they served in mason jars. We asked how it’s made and they happily gave us the recipe – 1.5oz of pre-mix, which was a combination of organic raspberry, fresh mint & lime with a few dashes of Twisted & Bitter, 1 oz rum, and top it off with soda and lime wheel and fresh mint garnish.

Almost everything was DIY. The décor consisted of banners which probably took them weeks to finish. The wedding programs were folded origami and the menu from cut-out air-mail envelopes. And how can we forget the four feet W & J paper mache that they made with their nieces and nephew.

Jars of homemade strawberry jam became the couple’s wedding favors, hundreds of homemade pies were a treat and it was prepared by the bride herself. Even the dresses of the flower girls were designed and sewn by Jacci’s mom.

Pictorials with the children were fun and eventful as there were a lot of running around, making faces, peeking through the windows, and a bunch of unexpected things. They were the sweetest bunch of kids you could ever meet. The flower wreaths on their heads as it matched their tulle dresses made them absolutely adorable.

It started raining right in the middle of pictorials. We found our models scrambling for cover. Those clear white umbrellas were brought out and we had more uniquely created photos that we have expected. Even while the ceremony started, guests were smiling while holding their umbrellas. Jacci’s dad walked her down the grassy aisle with one of those clear umbrellas on his hand. It’s something we don’t get to take a photo of everyday.

The ceremony was beautiful with a lot of smiles and a whole lot of love. We also had a real good time alone with the couple after as we took photos of them on an old blue truck that fit the whole vintage ambience. This was a real romantic and fulfilling moment for Walter and Jacci. From the photos we took, we could see how happy and fulfilled they were for what they did that day.

While rain is something that couples wish didn’t happen on their wedding day, it’s still good to prepare for the unexpected. Couples can take it as a sign of blessing just in case it does, and they could simply enjoy how water drizzles down like it was heaven’s dew. Some, however, are still concerned that because of the rain, the photos won’t turn out as nice compared to having clear weather. Time and again we are asked by couples what happens if it rains on their wedding day. Well, we couldn’t help but be honest. We tell them to expect three things – uniquely amazing photographs, absolutely crazy memories, and a very dirty photographer.
