Where Art and Emotion Meet: A Modern Toronto Wedding at AGO

Vivian & Ryan

When we first chatted with Vivian and Ryan, we knew their wedding day would be something special. Vivian shared that she “loves a more non-traditional, fun, candid vibe” with photos that capture the in-between moments. From that very first conversation, we knew the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) would be the perfect backdrop for their vision.

Vivian spent her wedding morning at 1 Hotel Toronto, surrounded by her closest friends and an effortlessly chic aesthetic. With soft natural light streaming through the windows, we photographed all the laughter, happy tears, and those beautiful quiet pauses before the excitement of the ceremony.

Her details were the definition of romance with clean lines, sleek textures, and one unforgettable pop of red. Her Manolo Blahnik heels stole the show, adding the perfect splash of personality to her black-tie look.

Meanwhile, Ryan was getting ready just a few blocks away at The Ritz-Carlton Toronto. He and his groomsmen didn’t waste any time popping champagne and starting the day with big smiles and big energy. It was the kind of candid, joy-filled moments that make our hearts happy to capture.

The Art Gallery of Ontario is truly one of the most stunning wedding venues in Toronto, truly a photographer’s dream. Its soaring ceilings, sculptural wooden staircases, and abundance of natural light create endless opportunities for creative imagery. Every curve and reflection tells its own story, and for Vivian and Ryan, those modern architectural details perfectly echoed their non-traditional aesthetic.

Their circular ceremony design was both unique and symbolic, signifying a celebration of unity, connection, and coming full circle. Framed by the AGO’s clean modern lines, it was an unforgettable space to exchange vows surrounded by their loved ones.

After the ceremony, we explored the gallery for portraits, and these are truly some of our favourite wedding photos we’ve ever taken.

We played with layered reflections from the gallery’s sweeping glass panels, using them to frame quiet moments between Vivian and Ryan. The building’s fluid lines and open spaces naturally guided our eye, allowing us to experiment with focus and motion blur to create that non-traditional, artistic energy Vivian had envisioned.

From the warm tones of the Gehry staircase to the gentle light spilling through the glass atrium, every corner of the AGO invited us to see their connection from a new angle. The result? A gallery of images that feels dynamic and full of life which is a true reflection of the day’s emotion.

Vivian and Ryan’s bridal party portraits further mirrored the day’s energy, sophisticated yet playful, polished but never posed. Every image feels alive and true to their personalities.

The reception space was a perfect continuation of their vision with one long, beautifully styled table where guests could share conversation and laughter all night long. The black furniture and modern design elements brought an elevated sense of design, while still feeling warm and inviting.

And as the night unfolded, the dance floor came alive! One of the things we love most about photographing weddings at the AGO is the opportunity to capture dances from above. The gallery’s open architecture lets us step back and photograph the entire atmosphere, the movement, the lights, and the energy of everyone celebrating together. These sweeping, cinematic perspectives add such emotion to the final gallery, truly telling the full story of the night.

Vivian and Ryan’s Art Gallery of Ontario wedding was everything we love, modern, meaningful, and filled with laughter and connection. Every detail, from the black-tie fashion to the non-traditional ceremony design, reflected who they are as a couple: elegant yet fun, creative yet timeless.

For couples dreaming of a Toronto wedding that feels both artistic and deeply personal, the AGO is an unbeatable setting. And for us, as Toronto wedding photographers, it will forever be one of our favourite days to look back on.

“After a detailed intake conversation, the studio assigned Maya and Vincent — they were an excellent fit for us. (It seemed to us that Purple Tree is very intentional in how they match client personalities with their photographers). They made us feel very comfortable in front of the camera, efficiently guided our shoot with clear posing and postural cues, and paid particular attention to the details, including our respective “preferred angles”
